Start with the finish you want

If the boards beneath your roof look grubby, you may want an exterior wash. If rainwater is overflowing, you may need gutter clearing or a repair. These are different jobs, and asking for the right one helps us prepare a useful quote.

This guide is for homeowners, landlords and businesses arranging roofline maintenance in Bath, Bristol and our surrounding service areas. You do not need to identify every fitting: clear photographs from ground level and a description of what bothers you are a good start.

Which parts are fascias and soffits?

  • Fascia: the outward-facing board along the roof edge, behind the gutter.
  • Soffit: the underside of the roof overhang, visible when you look up from beside the wall.
  • Gutter faces and downpipes: the outside surfaces of the fittings that carry rainwater away.

Describe the front, back and sides separately. A request for the “front roofline” is easier to price when it is clear whether it includes the porch, bay window and downpipes as well as the main roof.

Exterior washing and gutter clearing have different purposes

Exterior washing cleans the visible outside surfaces. Gutter clearing removes leaves, moss and silt from inside the gutter and addresses the agreed outlets. Washing the outside does not establish that the inside is clear, and a debris clear does not automatically include washing the boards.

You can request both together. At Bill’s Gutters, exterior washing is quoted separately, with accessible areas and the scope agreed before the visit. A leaking joint, damaged seal or loose bracket needs its own assessment. Our guide to overflow and leaking joints explains the clues to report.

Gentle care for uPVC

Manufacturers’ instructions are the starting point. Freefoam’s fascia care guidance recommends a mild detergent and water or a suitable non-abrasive PVC cleaner, followed by rinsing away residue. Eurocell’s fascia guidance recommends a soft cloth and warm soapy water, and advises against bleach, solvents, scourers and pressure washers.

Those instructions apply to the manufacturers’ products. Tell the cleaner if your boards are painted timber, coloured or woodgrain-finished, or if you have the original care instructions. Do not assume that a product suitable for one surface is suitable for every roofline.

Cleaning also has limits. Report cracks, peeling finishes, loose sections or staining that keeps returning. These need assessment rather than a promise that a stronger wash will make everything look new.

Keep ventilation in mind

Some soffits have built-in vents; others use separate ventilation components. Eurocell explains that vented soffits help air move through the roof space. Tell us about visible damage or obstruction around these openings. An exterior wash is not a roof-ventilation survey, so any underlying concern should be assessed separately.

Send these details with your quote request

  • Property: postcode, property type and number of storeys.
  • Surfaces: fascias, soffits, outside gutter faces and downpipes; say which sides need cleaning.
  • Other work: whether you also want the gutters cleared, or have noticed a leak.
  • Access: conservatories, extensions, narrow paths, locked gates and parking restrictions.
  • Photos: one wider view of each relevant side, plus a zoomed view of any concern, taken safely from the ground.

For rented homes, include the person who can arrange access. For business premises, mention opening hours and any shared entrance or customer walkway that affects when work can be planned.

No ladder photos needed. Ground-level pictures are enough to begin a quote. We review access rather than assuming every board can be reached over a conservatory or extension.

Ask for a clear scope before booking

A useful request might be: “Please quote to wash the front and rear fascias, soffits and outside gutter faces, and price an internal gutter clear separately. There is a conservatory at the back.” The office can then confirm the work, access and price before you accept.
