Why clean gutters matter

Gutters collect rain from your roof and carry it towards the downpipes. When leaves, moss and silt block that route, water can overflow instead of draining away.

  • Help protect walls and foundations. Working guttering directs rainwater into the drainage system, reducing repeated soaking around walls and the base of your home.
  • Reduce the risk of damage. Persistent leaks and overflowing gutters can contribute to damp, timber decay and deteriorating mortar. Clearing debris helps, but damaged joints or poorly aligned guttering may also need repair.
  • Remove wet debris. A clear gutter has less trapped material and standing water. Cleaning is useful maintenance, rather than a guarantee against pests.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

For many homes, planning a clean once or twice a year is a useful starting point. Autumn, after the main leaf fall, is a particularly useful time. A spring check helps identify material that has collected over winter.

Your property may need more frequent attention if trees overhang the roof or debris builds up quickly. Don’t wait for a calendar reminder if you notice overflowing water, plants growing in the gutter or staining beneath a joint.

What does gutter cleaning include?

The method depends on the height, access and condition of the property. At Bill’s Gutters, the agreed gutter-clearing work focuses on:

  1. Removing debris from accessible gutter runs using suitable equipment, such as a gutter vacuum or hand tools where safe access allows.
  2. Checking outlets and clearing the tops of downpipes so water has a route out of the gutter. Water testing or further downpipe work depends on access and the agreed scope.
  3. Inspecting visible joints and guttering for signs of leaks, sagging or loose fittings, and reporting any further work needed.
  4. Photographing the work so you can see what has been cleared and any visible defects found.

Exterior washing of gutters, fascias and soffits is a separate service. Repairs, dismantling downpipes and underground drainage work are not automatically included in a standard gutter clear.

Spot a problem from the ground

During rainfall, look for water spilling over the gutter edge or running down the wall. Afterwards, check for staining, drips at joints or water collecting near the house. Ground-level photos can help us understand the problem before your visit.
